WHY_CONVERT: PES → JEF
PES is Brother's native format, used by millions of home embroidery enthusiasts. But if you own a Janome machine — Memory Craft, Horizon, Skyline, or an Elna — PES files won't open. Janome machines use JEF format, their own proprietary standard with different structure and metadata.
ThreadShifter converts PES to JEF in under a second. No software, no account, no limits. Upload your Brother PES design and get a JEF file ready for any Janome machine.
PROCEDURE // 3_STEPS
1. UPLOAD YOUR PES FILE
Drag and drop your Brother PES file onto the converter, or click to browse. Files up to 50MB accepted. Works with any PES file — Brother PE800 designs, Luminaire files, or downloaded embroidery patterns.
TROUBLESHOOTING: If upload fails, check that the file extension is .pes and the file isn't corrupted. Some PES v1 files may not convert properly — newer PES v6 files work best.
2. SELECT JEF AS TARGET
Choose "JEF (Janome)" from the format selector. Optionally select your hoop size to ensure the design fits your Janome machine's hoop correctly.
PRO TIP: Janome hoops come in 5×7 and 6×10 sizes for most Memory Craft models. Check your manual for exact dimensions.
3. DOWNLOAD & EMBROIDER
Click "Convert & Download". Your JEF file is ready instantly. Transfer it to your Janome machine via USB or SD card, and start embroidering.
TROUBLESHOOTING: If the design doesn't appear on your Janome, try reformatting your USB to FAT32. Some older Janome models require JEF files in a specific folder structure.

SCENARIO 1: Swapping Machines with a Friend

UNDERSTANDING_THE_FORMATS
PES (Brother) — HOME EMBROIDERY STANDARD
PES is Brother's native embroidery format, compatible with every Brother and Baby Lock machine. PES v6 files contain stitch data, thread color assignments, a built-in design preview image, and hoop size information. It's the most widely supported format for home embroidery machines.
FILE EXTENSION: .pes • USED BY: Brother, Baby Lock
JEF (Janome) — JANOME'S NATIVE FORMAT
JEF is Janome's proprietary embroidery format, used across their entire machine lineup including Memory Craft, Horizon, Skyline, and Elna. JEF files store stitch data, thread color assignments using Janome's color palette system, and design preview thumbnails. The format supports multiple hoop sizes and includes Janome-specific metadata for optimal machine performance.
FILE EXTENSION: .jef • USED BY: Janome, Elna
COMPATIBLE_JANOME_MACHINES
ThreadShifter outputs JEF format compatible with all Janome and Elna machines. Here are the most common models:
TROUBLESHOOTING_GUIDE
JEF FILE WON'T OPEN ON MY JANOME
First, try re-downloading the file. Make sure your Janome software is updated. Some older Janome models may require JEF files saved in a specific version — ThreadShifter outputs the most compatible JEF format. Check your machine manual for JEF version requirements.
COLORS LOOK WRONG ON MY JANOME SCREEN
PES uses Brother's color palette, which maps differently to Janome's color system. The stitch data is preserved correctly — the color display is just a mapping issue. Reassign colors on your Janome machine using its built-in palette before stitching.
DESIGN WON'T FIT JANOME HOOP SIZE
The original PES file may have been created for a larger Brother hoop. Before converting, select your Janome's hoop size in ThreadShifter's dropdown. The converter will auto-scale the design to fit.
USB TRANSFER FAILS
Janome machines prefer USB drives formatted as FAT32. Some models require files to be placed in a specific folder (e.g., \EMBROIDERY or \DESIGNS). Check your Janome manual for the correct folder structure and file naming conventions.
STITCH DENSITY TOO HIGH
Some PES designs have very high stitch density optimized for Brother machines. Janome machines may handle this differently. If you get thread breaks, try reducing the stitch speed on your Janome or using a higher-quality thread.
