WHY_CONVERT: DST → JEF

DST is the universal format used by every commercial embroidery shop and professional digitizer. But Janome and Elna machines don't read DST — they need JEF. If you buy designs from Etsy, receive logos from a digitizer, or work with a production facility, the files will almost always arrive in DST format.

ThreadShifter converts DST to JEF instantly. Your stitch data stays intact, and the output works on every Janome machine from the Memory Craft 500E to the Horizon 12000.

PROCEDURE // 3_STEPS

1. UPLOAD YOUR DST FILE

Drag and drop your Tajima DST file onto the converter. Works with DST files from any source — commercial digitizers, online marketplaces, logo files from print shops, or vintage designs from your archive.

TROUBLESHOOTING: If your DST file won't upload, check it has a .dst extension and isn't password-protected or corrupted. Some older DST files from the 1990s may need to be re-saved in modern digitizing software first.

2. SELECT JEF AS TARGET

Choose "JEF (Janome)" from the format selector. If your design is larger than your Janome's hoop, select your hoop size (4×4, 5×7, 6×8, 6×10) and ThreadShifter will auto-scale it to fit.

PRO TIP: Janome machines use JEF+ files for larger hoops. ThreadShifter outputs standard JEF which works on all models. For designs over 5×7, verify your machine supports that hoop size.

3. DOWNLOAD & EMBROIDER

Click "Convert & Download". Your JEF file is ready instantly. Copy it to your Janome machine via USB or SD card and start stitching.

TROUBLESHOOTING: If the design doesn't appear on your Janome, make sure your USB drive is formatted as FAT32. Janome machines may not display designs stored in subfolders — place the JEF file in the root directory.

REAL_USER_SCENARIOS

SCENARIO 1: Etsy Design on a Janome Machine

"I bought a gorgeous wedding monogram design from an Etsy shop. The file came as DST. My Janome Memory Craft 550E needs JEF. I was stuck until I found ThreadShifter — uploaded the DST, picked JEF, and it was on my machine in two minutes. Saved me from buying expensive conversion software."

SCENARIO 2: Logo from a Print Shop

"My local print shop digitized our company logo for embroidery patches. They sent me the file in DST format — standard for commercial work. My Janome Horizon 12000 can't open DST. I used ThreadShifter to convert to JEF and embroidered patches for our whole team. Zero issues."

SCENARIO 3: Switching from Commercial to Home Setup

"I used to work on a multi-head Tajima machine at my old job and have a library of hundreds of DST designs. When I switched to working from home on a Janome Skyline S9, I couldn't use any of my old files. ThreadShifter batch-converted everything to JEF. My entire design library works again."

UNDERSTANDING_THE_FORMATS

DST (Tajima) — THE INDUSTRY STANDARD

DST is the most widely-supported embroidery format globally. Developed by Tajima, it stores pure stitch instructions — needle drops, jump stitches, and trims. Every commercial machine reads DST. The tradeoff: no color data, no preview image, and no machine-specific features.

FILE EXTENSION: .dst • USED BY: Tajima, Barudan, SWF, Happy, Melco

JEF (Janome) — JANOME'S NATIVE FORMAT

JEF is Janome's embroidery format, used by Janome Memory Craft, Horizon, Skyline, and Elna machines. JEF files include stitch data, thread color assignments, design previews, and Janome-specific information like automatic thread cutting and fabric type settings. JEF files are optimized for home embroidery with features DST can't store.

FILE EXTENSION: .jef • USED BY: Janome Memory Craft, Horizon, Skyline, Elna

COMPATIBLE_JANOME_MACHINES

ThreadShifter outputs standard JEF, compatible with every Janome and Elna machine that supports embroidery. Here are the most common models:

NOTE: Janome machines with smaller hoops (4×4 or 5×7) will crop designs that exceed their hoop dimensions. Use ThreadShifter's hoop selector to auto-scale before converting.

TROUBLESHOOTING_GUIDE

COLORS WRONG AFTER CONVERSION

DST files don't store thread color information, so the JEF output uses default color assignments. This is normal. Open the JEF file on your Janome machine and use the color palette to assign the correct thread colors. The stitch data and design structure are preserved perfectly.

DESIGN TOO LARGE FOR YOUR JANOME HOOP

DST files are often created for commercial hoops (up to 14×14 or larger). Before converting, select your machine's hoop size in the dropdown — 4×4 (100×100mm), 5×7 (130×180mm), 6×8 (160×200mm), or 6×10 (160×250mm). ThreadShifter will auto-scale. If the design loses too much detail when scaled, consider splitting it into multiple hoopings.

JEF FILE NOT SHOWING ON JANOME SCREEN

Place the JEF file in the root directory of your USB drive (not in a subfolder). Format the drive as FAT32 — Janome machines may not read exFAT or NTFS. If it still doesn't appear, try a different USB drive (2GB–32GB, USB 2.0 works best).

DESIGN STITCHES BROKEN OR GAPPY

Some DST files use proprietary stitch commands that don't translate perfectly to JEF. If you see gaps, missing sections, or broken stitch sequences, the original DST may use advanced features like triple stitches or custom jump patterns. Try re-digitizing the design or using a simpler DST version if available.

THREAD BREAKS ON DENSE DESIGNS

Commercial DST files are often digitized for high-speed machines with heavy thread tension. When converted to JEF for a Janome home machine, dense areas may cause thread breaks. Slow down your machine speed for complex sections. If the problem persists, the original design may need density reduction.
