WHY_CONVERT: PES → DST

You designed something beautiful on your Brother home machine. Now you want to produce it at scale — patches, hats, bulk orders. Commercial embroidery shops don't open PES files. They work in DST, the universal standard for industrial machines.

ThreadShifter converts PES to DST instantly. Your stitch data stays intact, and the output works on every commercial machine — Tajima, Barudan, SWF, Happy, Ricoma, and more. One click, zero compatibility issues.

PROCEDURE // 3_STEPS

1. UPLOAD YOUR PES FILE

Drag and drop your Brother PES file onto the converter. Works with PES files from any Brother machine — PE800, SE1900, Luminaire, or designs created in Brother software like PE-Design.

TROUBLESHOOTING: If your PES file won't upload, check it has a .pes extension. Some older PES (v4 or v5) files work fine — ThreadShifter handles all PES versions.

2. SELECT DST AS TARGET

Choose "DST (Tajima)" from the format selector. No hoop selection needed for DST — commercial machines handle a wide range of sizes. The conversion preserves all stitch data.

NOTE: DST does not store thread color info. Colors from your PES file are mapped to standard DST color numbers. Your embroidery shop will assign their own thread colors.

3. DOWNLOAD & SEND TO PRODUCTION

Click "Convert & Download". Your DST file is ready instantly. Email it to your embroidery service, upload to their order portal, or load it onto a USB drive for a local shop.

PRO TIP: Most commercial shops prefer DST files under 100,000 stitches for standard projects. Check with your production shop about their stitch count limits before sending large designs.

REAL_USER_SCENARIOS

SCENARIO 1: Home Design → Commercial Production

"I designed custom embroidery for my daughter's softball team on my Brother SE1900. The local embroidery shop that does the bulk production refused PES — they only accept DST. ThreadShifter converted my design in seconds. The shop loaded it straight onto their Tajima multi-head and the patches came out perfectly."

SCENARIO 2: Selling Designs on Marketplaces

"I sell embroidery designs on Etsy and Creative Fabrica. Most buyers own Brother machines, so I work in PES. But commercial digitizers and production shops want DST. I use ThreadShifter to convert my PES designs to DST before listing them. Now I reach both audiences from one source file."

SCENARIO 3: Client Has a Commercial Machine

"I digitize custom logos for clients. One client uses a Brother at home and gets PES from me. But their business partner has a 6-head Tajima — needs DST. Instead of maintaining two digitizing workflows, I send them to ThreadShifter. They convert PES to DST themselves when they need production runs."

UNDERSTANDING_THE_FORMATS

PES (Brother) — HOME EMBROIDERY FORMAT

PES is Brother's rich embroidery format used by all Brother and Baby Lock home machines. It stores stitch data, thread color assignments, a built-in preview image, hoop metadata, and machine-specific settings. PES files are feature-rich but only readable by Brother/Baby Lock equipment.

FILE EXTENSION: .pes • USED BY: Brother PE/SE/Innovis, Baby Lock

DST (Tajima) — THE INDUSTRY STANDARD

DST is the universal language of commercial embroidery. Developed by Tajima, it stores pure stitch instructions — needle drops, jump stitches, and thread trims. Every commercial machine reads DST. It strips out Brother-specific metadata but gains universal compatibility. DST files are also significantly smaller, making them easy to email and transfer.

FILE EXTENSION: .dst • USED BY: Tajima, Barudan, SWF, Happy, Melco, Ricoma

COMPATIBLE_COMMERCIAL_MACHINES

DST files work on every commercial embroidery machine. Here are the most common models and their capabilities:

Tajima TMEX Series2–20 heads · up to 14×14 hoop
INDUSTRY STANDARD
Barudan BEAT Series1–20 heads · up to 14×14 hoop
High Speed
SWF MAS Series1–18 heads · up to 12×12 hoop
Value Option
Happy HCD Series1–15 heads · up to 14×14 hoop
Reliable
Ricoma EM Series1–12 heads · up to 12×12 hoop
Popular Small Biz
Brother PR Series1–6 heads · up to 8×12 hoop
Brother Commercial

NOTE: DST's universal compatibility means any of these machines can read a properly converted PES→DST file. No special settings needed — the machine handles it automatically.

TROUBLESHOOTING_GUIDE

COLORS DON'T MATCH AFTER CONVERSION

DST doesn't store thread color information. When you convert from PES to DST, the color data is lost because the DST format has no place to put it. This is expected behavior. Commercial machines have their own color wheels — provide a thread color map to your production shop separately. The stitch data itself is intact.

MACHINE STOPS MID-DESIGN

Some commercial machines have stitch count limits per design. If your PES design is very detailed, the converted DST may exceed your machine's limit. Typical limits: 100,000–200,000 stitches per design on most commercial machines. Check with your production shop, or reduce the design complexity in your Brother software before converting.

DESIGN CROPPED OR OFF-CENTER ON COMMERCIAL MACHINE

PES files include hoop metadata that may not match the commercial machine's hoop. The stitch data itself is accurate, but the machine may interpret the origin point differently. Most commercial machines let you adjust positioning before starting. If it's consistently off-center, try re-saving the PES with centered coordinates before conversion.

FILE SIZE TOO LARGE TO EMAIL

DST files are typically much smaller than PES files because they strip out color data, preview images, and metadata. However, highly detailed designs with complex stitch patterns can still be large. If your DST file is over 10MB, try compressing it as a ZIP before emailing. Most shops accept ZIP attachments.

COMMERCIAL SHOP SAYS FILE WON'T OPEN

This is rare but usually means the original PES file was exported from software that uses non-standard encoding. Try re-saving the PES from your Brother machine's software (PE-Design, Brother Canvas, or similar) and converting again. If the issue persists, ask the shop which specific error they're seeing and share that with us for troubleshooting.
