Understanding PES and HUS Formats
What is a PES File?
PES is Brother's native embroidery format and the most common format for home embroidery designs online. PES files contain stitch data, colour information using Brother's extensive thread palette, and metadata for Brother machine display. PES version 6 is the current standard and is backward compatible with most Brother machines manufactured in the last decade.
What is a HUS File?
HUS is the proprietary format for Husqvarna Viking embroidery machines. It stores stitch commands and coordinates in compressed binary blocks, with a fixed thread palette of 29 colours. HUS files are used with classic Viking models (Rose, Iris, Scandinavia) and many semi-professional Viking machines. The format is compact and efficient, making it ideal for the memory constraints of older Viking machines.
