WHY_CONVERT: JEF → PES
You have a Janome machine (or bought designs in JEF format) and now need them on a Brother machine. Maybe you upgraded, got a free Brother from a friend, or your embroidery group shares designs in JEF. Whatever the reason — your Brother machine can't open JEF files directly.
ThreadShifter converts JEF to PES instantly. Every stitch, every color sequence, every detail transfers cleanly. The output works on every Brother and Baby Lock machine that accepts PES — from the compact SE600 to the Luminaire XP1.
PROCEDURE // 3_STEPS
1. UPLOAD YOUR JEF FILE
Drag and drop your Janome JEF file onto the converter. Works with JEF files from any Janome machine — Memory Craft, Horizon, Skyline — or designs purchased from marketplaces that offer JEF download options.
TROUBLESHOOTING: JEF files usually upload without issue. If yours won't load, check it has a .jef extension and isn't damaged. Very old JEF files from early 2000s Janome machines may need to be re-saved in modern software first.
2. SELECT PES AS TARGET
Choose "PES (Brother)" from the format selector. Optionally select your Brother machine's hoop size (4×4, 5×7, 6×10, or custom). ThreadShifter preserves color sequences from the JEF file and maps them intelligently to the PES color palette.
PRO TIP: JEF files store color info differently than PES. Colors should transfer closely, but you may need minor adjustments on your Brother machine. The stitch sequences are preserved perfectly.
3. DOWNLOAD & EMBROIDER
Click "Convert & Download". Your PES file is ready instantly. Transfer it to your Brother machine via USB and start embroidering. The design preview, color sequence, and all stitch data are intact.
TROUBLESHOOTING: If the design doesn't appear on your Brother machine, check that your USB drive is FAT32 format. Brother machines may also require PES files to be in the root folder, not a subdirectory.

REAL_USER_SCENARIOS
SCENARIO 1: Upgraded from Janome to Brother
"I used a Janome Memory Craft 500E for years and built a library of hundreds of JEF designs. When I upgraded to a Brother Luminaire XP1, I thought I'd lost all my designs. ThreadShifter batch-converted everything to PES. Not a single design was lost or corrupted. Worth every penny of zero dollars."

SCENARIO 2: Design Swap Between Friends
"My embroidery buddy has a Janome Skyline S9. I have a Brother SE1900. We love swapping designs, but our machines use different formats. Now she sends me JEF files and I run them through ThreadShifter. Works every time. The best part — she can also convert my PES files to JEF when she wants my designs."

SCENARIO 3: Marketplace Design in JEF Format
"I found the perfect Halloween design on a marketplace site, but it was only available in JEF. My Brother PE800 needs PES. Most sellers won't convert formats for you. I bought the JEF file, uploaded it to ThreadShifter, and had a working PES file in seconds. The design stitched perfectly."

UNDERSTANDING_THE_FORMATS
JEF (Janome) — JANOME'S NATIVE FORMAT
JEF is Janome's embroidery format for Memory Craft, Horizon, Skyline, and Elna machines. It stores stitch data, thread color assignments, a design preview image, and Janome-specific settings like automatic thread cutting and fabric type preferences. JEF files are rich with information but only readable by Janome/Elna equipment.
FILE EXTENSION: .jef • USED BY: Janome Memory Craft, Horizon, Skyline, Elna
PES (Brother) — BROTHER'S EMBROIDERY FORMAT
PES is Brother's native format, used by every Brother and Baby Lock home embroidery machine. PES stores stitch data, thread colors, a built-in design preview, hoop metadata, and Brother-specific settings. PES v6 (the version ThreadShifter outputs) is compatible with all modern Brother machines. Unlike JEF, PES files also store a visible thumbnail on the machine's screen.
FILE EXTENSION: .pes • USED BY: Brother PE/SE/Innovis, Baby Lock
COMPATIBLE_BROTHER_MACHINES
ThreadShifter outputs PES v6, compatible with every Brother and Baby Lock machine. Here are the most common models:
NOTE: If your Janome design was created for a larger hoop than your Brother machine supports, use ThreadShifter's hoop selector to auto-scale. Designs wider than your hoop will be cropped.
TROUBLESHOOTING_GUIDE
COLORS LOOK DIFFERENT ON BROTHER SCREEN
Janome and Brother use different color palettes. ThreadShifter maps colors as closely as possible between the two systems, but some shades may shift slightly. This is cosmetic — the stitch sequence and color order are preserved. Adjust individual colors on your Brother machine's palette before stitching.
DESIGN WON'T FIT BROTHER HOOP
Janome machines often support larger hoops than standard Brother home machines. If your JEF design was created for a 6×10 hoop but your Brother uses 4×4, the design will be cropped. Before converting, select your Brother's hoop size in ThreadShifter's dropdown to auto-scale. Large reductions may lose fine detail.
PES FILE NOT SHOWING ON BROTHER SCREEN
Make sure your USB drive is formatted as FAT32 (not exFAT or NTFS). Place the PES file in the root directory — Brother machines may not display files in subfolders. If it still doesn't appear, try a USB 2.0 drive between 2GB–32GB. Some newer Brother models can also transfer via wireless connection.
JANOME-SPECIFIC STITCH COMMANDS NOT TRANSFERRING
Some advanced Janome features (like automatic thread cutting at specific points or fabric type adjustments) are JEF-specific and don't have direct equivalents in PES. Basic stitch data and color changes transfer perfectly. Your Brother machine will apply its own default behavior for thread trims and speed, which is usually equivalent.
STITCH SEQUENCE CHANGED ORDER
This is extremely rare but can happen if the JEF file used non-standard color-change encoding. The stitch data itself is preserved, but the color-change order may need adjustment on your Brother machine. Open the design preview on your Brother and check the color sequence before stitching. Most conversions preserve order perfectly.
