Understanding DST and HUS Formats
What is a DST File?
DST (Tajima) is the commercial embroidery industry standard. It encodes each stitch as a 3-byte record describing relative X/Y movement (up to 121 units per record) and a command (stitch, jump, or colour change). DST does not contain colour information — colours are assigned separately at the machine or in operator software. It's the most universally compatible embroidery format in existence.
What is a HUS File?
HUS is Husqvarna Viking's native embroidery format. Unlike DST, HUS does carry colour data — it stores thread colour indices referencing Husqvarna's 29-colour palette. HUS files use a proprietary LZH-style compression for their three data blocks (command, X-coordinate, Y-coordinate), and the format supports up to 256 colour stops. This makes HUS better than DST for preserving multi-colour design intent on Viking machines.
About Colour When Converting DST to HUS
Because DST files contain no colour data, ThreadShifter applies a smart high-contrast colour palette when converting to HUS: black, red, blue, gold, green, and so on, cycling through the HUS palette in order of the colour changes in your design. You can adjust thread colours on your Viking machine after loading the file. If you need precise colour preservation, start from a colour-aware format like PES or JEF instead.
