WHY_CONVERT: HUS → DST

DST is the universal language of commercial embroidery. Every professional embroidery shop, every commercial digitizer, and virtually every industrial machine speaks DST. If you have designs in Husqvarna Viking's HUS format and want to send them to a commercial shop, use them on a commercial machine, or simply ensure maximum compatibility across the industry, converting HUS to DST is the right move. ThreadShifter converts HUS to DST in milliseconds, stripping the Husqvarna-specific encoding and producing a clean, industry-standard Tajima file.

PROCEDURE // 3_STEPS

  1. Upload Your HUS File: Drag and drop your HUS file onto the converter or click to browse. Supports all Husqvarna Viking HUS files up to 10 MB.
  2. Select DST Format: Click the "DST" tile in the format selector. DST is the Tajima format — the commercial embroidery industry standard.
  3. Download Your DST File: Click "Convert & Download". Your DST file is ready to send to any commercial embroidery shop or load on any commercial machine.

Benefits of Using ThreadShifter for HUS to DST Conversion

Understanding HUS and DST Formats

What is a HUS File?

HUS is the proprietary embroidery format developed by Husqvarna Viking for their line of home embroidery machines. The format stores stitch commands, X/Y coordinate deltas, and thread colour indices in three separate compressed data blocks, all preceded by a binary header containing design metadata. HUS supports up to 256 colour changes, using a fixed 29-colour thread palette that maps to Husqvarna's thread range.

What is a DST File?

DST (Tajima) is the de facto standard in commercial embroidery. Every professional shop can read DST. The format encodes stitch data as 3-byte records — each record describes a relative move (up to 121 units in any direction) and a command (stitch, jump, or colour change). DST files do not contain colour information, which is why commercial shops use a separate colour chart alongside the DST file.

Common Use Cases for HUS to DST Conversion

  • • Sending a Husqvarna Viking design to a commercial embroidery shop for production
  • • Using HUS designs on industrial Tajima, Barudan, or ZSK machines
  • • Archiving your design library in the most universally compatible format
  • • Sharing designs across a mixed machine environment (some Viking, some commercial)
  • • Uploading designs to embroidery marketplaces that require DST format

Important Notes: Colour in DST Files

DST files do not carry colour data — this is a limitation of the format, not our converter. When you convert HUS to DST, the stitch paths and colour change positions are fully preserved, but the actual colour assignments are not stored in the DST file. Commercial embroidery shops use a separate colour stop list or thread chart to assign colours when loading a DST file on their machines. If you need colour data preserved, consider converting HUS to PES or JEF instead.
