WHY_CONVERT: DST → PES

DST is the universal standard for commercial embroidery. Every professional digitizer, production facility, and embroidery service bureau uses it. But if you own a Brother or Baby Lock home embroidery machine, DST files won't open directly. Your machine needs PES.

ThreadShifter converts DST to PES in under a second. No software, no account, no limits. Upload your DST, get a PES file that works on every Brother machine from the PE800 to the Luminaire XP1.

PROCEDURE // 3_STEPS

1. UPLOAD YOUR DST FILE

Drag and drop your Tajima DST file onto the converter, or click to browse. Files up to 50MB accepted. The converter works with any DST file — commercial designs, purchased patterns, digitized logos, or vintage files.

TROUBLESHOOTING: If upload fails, check the file extension is .dst and the file isn't corrupted. Try re-downloading from the source.

2. SELECT PES AS TARGET

Choose "PES (Brother)" from the format selector. Optionally select your hoop size (4×4, 5×7, 6×10, or custom) and ThreadShifter will auto-scale the design to fit.

PRO TIP: Know your machine's hoop size before converting. A design scaled for 5×7 will look different on a 4×4 hoop.

3. DOWNLOAD & EMBROIDER

Click "Convert & Download". Your PES file is ready instantly. Transfer it to your Brother machine via USB or wireless connection, and start embroidering.

TROUBLESHOOTING: If the design doesn't appear on your machine, try re-formatting your USB drive as FAT32. Brother machines may not read exFAT or NTFS drives.

REAL_USER_SCENARIOS

SCENARIO 1: Etsy Shopper with a Brother Machine

"I bought a beautiful floral embroidery design on Etsy. The seller only offers DST format. My Brother PE800 needs PES. I was about to refund the purchase when I found ThreadShifter. Uploaded the DST, downloaded PES, and had it on my machine in under a minute."

✓ THREADSHIFTER SOLVES THIS

SCENARIO 2: Commercial to Home Handoff

"Our shop uses a multi-head Tajima machine (DST format). I also embroider at home on my Brother SE1900. I export designs from work, convert DST to PES with ThreadShifter, text them to my phone, and open on my home machine. Zero friction."

✓ THREADSHIFTER SOLVES THIS

SCENARIO 3: Digitizer Sending to a Brother User

"I digitize custom logo patches for clients. One client owns a Brother Luminaire. I work in DST, they need PES. Instead of buying PES-compatible digitizing software, I just send them a link to ThreadShifter. They convert it themselves in seconds."

UNDERSTANDING_THE_FORMATS

DST (Tajima) — THE INDUSTRY STANDARD

DST is the most widely-supported embroidery format in the world. Developed by Tajima, it stores pure stitch instructions — needle drop positions, jump stitches, and thread trims. DST files are compact and work on virtually every commercial machine. The tradeoff: DST stores no thread color data, no design preview, and no machine-specific settings.

FILE EXTENSION: .dst • USED BY: Tajima, Barudan, SWF, Happy, Melco

PES (Brother) — HOME EMBROIDERY STANDARD

PES is Brother's native format, used by every Brother and Baby Lock home embroidery machine. PES files contain everything your Brother machine needs: stitch data, thread color assignments, a built-in design preview image, hoop size information, and Brother-specific settings. PES v6 (the version ThreadShifter outputs) is compatible with all modern Brother machines.

FILE EXTENSION: .pes • USED BY: Brother PE/SE/Innovis, Baby Lock

COMPATIBLE_BROTHER_MACHINES

ThreadShifter outputs PES v6, compatible with every Brother and Baby Lock machine. Here are the most common models and their hoop sizes:

TROUBLESHOOTING_GUIDE

COLORS MISSING IN YOUR PES FILE

This is expected. DST files do not store thread color information — they only contain stitch coordinates. After conversion, your Brother machine will assign default colors. Open the design on your machine and use the color palette to assign the correct threads. The stitch data itself is preserved perfectly.

DESIGN WON'T FIT YOUR BROTHER HOOP

Your DST file may have been created for a larger hoop. Before converting, select your machine's hoop size in ThreadShifter's hoop dropdown. The converter will auto-scale the design to fit. If the design is extremely large, it may lose detail when scaled down — consider splitting it into multiple hoops.

FILE WON'T OPEN ON MY BROTHER MACHINE

First, try re-downloading the converted file. If it still doesn't work, the original DST may be corrupted — test with a different DST file. Also check your USB drive format: Brother machines require FAT32, not exFAT or NTFS. If the design still fails, the stitch count may exceed what your machine can handle (most Brother models support up to ~50,000 stitches).

DESIGN IS OFF-CENTER WHEN EMBROIDERING

This usually means the DST file had a design offset that doesn't match your hoop's center point. Re-convert with ThreadShifter and enable "Center Design" in the options. If the problem persists, the original DST may have been digitized with an unusual machine origin point — try re-digitizing the design.

THREAD BREAKS DURING EMBROIDERY

DST files sometimes contain very dense stitch patterns designed for high-speed commercial machines. When converted to PES for a home machine, the density can cause thread breaks. Use your Brother machine's speed control (if available) to slow down for dense areas. If it persists, the source design may need density reduction in digitizing software.
