Embroidery hoop size reference (mm and inches)
Hoops are usually sold under an inch name — 4x4, 5x7, 6x10 — but embroidery files and digitising software measure in millimetres. This table converts the common hoop classes both ways.

These are nominal sizes: the usable stitched area of a hoop for the same name can differ by a few millimetres between machine models. Trust your machine's manual for the exact figure, and remember that hooping and fabric thickness eat into the edge of the area.

How do I know if an embroidery design fits my hoop?
Compare the stitched area of the design with the usable area of the hoop. A design fits when its width and height are both smaller than the hoop's width and height, or when it fits after being rotated 90°. This calculator does that comparison for you and reports the shortfall in millimetres when the design is too big.
What does a 4x4 hoop mean in millimetres?
A 4x4 hoop is the common name for a hoop with a stitched area of roughly 100 x 100 mm (about 3.9 x 3.9 inches). 5x7 hoops are roughly 130 x 180 mm, and 6x10 hoops are roughly 160 x 260 mm.
